Crying is not a symptom, it is a form of communication
When a baby cries, it usually expresses a need. However, in the emergency department the most common reasons for crying are the unfamiliar faces around them, the white light and the loud noises.
This device directs the child's gaze to a familiar and calm visual.
Why visual?
In hearing-impaired children or in very young babies, auditory distraction is not enough. A visual stimulus works independently of language development.
Design decisions
- Soft light diffusion: Harsh screen light disturbs the eye and increases crying.
- Adjustable brightness: For light-sensitive children.
- Remote control: Staff do not have to approach the device.
- Sterilisable surface: For infection control.
- Portable body: Can be taken next to the bed in the emergency department.
Content
Nature scenes (rain, forest, waves), slowly moving optical patterns and soft animations. Fast, high-contrast content is deliberately not used — these increase arousal.
Result
In clinics, pre-procedure preparation time shortened, procedure success increased and parent satisfaction rose noticeably.
